In December 2010, my sister (Grizelda, remember?) had been bugging me for over a year to apply for a job at Amgen in Thousand Oaks, California, which is about an hour north of Los Angeles. When the financial situation started getting dire (my bank job paid less than unemployment, so I was slowly eating away at the savings I had so diligently put away while working in research), I finally was ready to make the move. I applied for and got a temporary position in Compliance at Amgen, a job that is quite different than the previous things I've done. It was fantastic for my self-diagnosed OCD. I was drafting contracts that had to have every "T" crossed and every "i" dotted correctly every time. I enjoyed my coworkers and the pay was great. The only hindrance was that it was indeed a temporary position, and could not last longer than eleven months.
While working there, I also took Improvisation and Acting classes. That way, should I reach the end of my eleven month stint, I could be prepared to dabble in an acting career. It was wonderful to finally be putting money INTO savings again, instead of drawing it out. In April I was interviewed for a full time, permanent position in the same department, Compliance. I was offered the job and began as a permanent employee on May 23rd, 2011 (I'm a real boy!), and am still in that position today. A very small part of me was actually a bit disappointed I wouldn't have the forced impetus to experiment in acting, but I am EXCEEDINGLY grateful to have benefits and a reasonably secure, steady job.
